Delaware Mutual Insurance Company -- always friendly by Olivia Richards, Herman Review Herman's True Value Home Center is a hardware store and a lumber yard. It offers a full line of hardware items, and the lumber yard offers a full line of home building and remodeling supplies. The business is owned and operated by Mark and Jayne Oachs of Herman. In June, 1993, Mark and Jayne bought Herman's hardware store and lumber yard from Bob and Sharon Vipond. They had owned the business since 1987, and before that, Bob owned the business with his brother Dale. Dale and Bob bought the lumber yard from Standard Lumber in 1971. The store is well stocked with supplies needed for fix-up projects around the home, farm, or business. Lumber, electrical, and plumbing supplies are readily available. Perhaps you still need to winterize your home or outbuildings ‹ they have a large selection of supplies to help you complete the project. Window glass and screen replacement are also provided. When you enter the front door, on the wall to the right, there's a large fastener center, with nuts and bolts to accommodate your needs. To the left the shelves are stocked with garden and bird feeding supplies, and stove pipe and furnace supplies. With the holidays approaching, the store is stocked with items for gift giving, beautiful Christmas decor for decorating your home, and even Christmas cards to send to friends and family. Herman's True Value Home Center is Herman's paint center. They have a large selection of exterior and interior paint, stains, and will mix to order. Paint chip samples and a gift certificate from Herman's True Value Home Center would be a great gift for someone who wants to do some redecorating. There is also a large selection of wallpaper books from which to choose borders or wall covering to accent the new paint job. The store stocks carpet cleaning supplies, along with other kitchen and household cleaning items. Customers can take advantage of renting a carpet cleaning machine. In the spring and fall, customers can also rent a lawn aerator, and a fertilizer broadcaster. They also have an appliance cart available for customer use. Manager Carmel Powell, an employee for 10 years, and Jane Mahoney strive to meet the customer's needs. They will accommodate special delivery items, and fill custom orders. The store receives daily deliveries. Carol McRoberts comes in on a part-time basis, and Scott Tolifson, a senior at the H-N School, works every afternoon for an hour or so through school to work. Mark and Jayne's children, Jennifer and Matthew, grew up at the store and learned at an early age how to wait on customers and make change. Matthew is a senior at the H-N School, and Jennifer is married to Lane Pederson and they live in Herman. She is a student at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, and is slated to graduate in May. Mark and Jayne and their employees strive to provide friendly, helpful service to the customers who stop by the store. A free bag of popcorn is their way of saying thank you. The store is located at 108 6th Street, a block north of Hwy 27. The telephone number is 320-677-2287. |
