Phil's Flooring -- carpet, vinyl, VCT or ceramic tile installation by Olivia Richards, Herman Review Philip Groneberg is Phil's Flooring. He's experienced in the installation of all types of flooring and ceramic tile. He operates out of his rural home. Customers are served in a 50-mile radius of Herman. Commercial businesses as well as homeowners make up his clientele. Jobs are secured from individuals and through several carpet dealers in the area including Ranney Furniture and Floor Covering in Wheaton, Unger Furniture Co., Yeager's Floor Store, and Midwest Carpet and Furniture, all of Morris, and Kim's Interiors in Elbow Lake. Phil has also laid flooring for customers through orders from Stone Mountain Carpet Mill Outlet and Floor to Ceiling in Alexandria. When Phil is asked to lay floor covering, he appreciates the chance to help the homeowner or business measure the room before ordering. It's best to contact him, he says, about a month in advance of the work that is to be done. Although, he says, he isn't booked solid in case something comes up that needs to be done soon. "As a sole proprietor, I can schedule my work days as I see fit," said Phil. Bill Volker of Herman has been working with Phil for the past year as contract labor, and since it's going well, they plan to form a partnership. Karen Groneberg, Phil's wife, works with him for eight months of the year when she's not doing tax work for Chris Mitchell of Elbow Lake. They pride themselves on seeing the job done from start to finish, from moving the furniture or appliances if needed, to putting them back after the flooring job is complete. Phil has an extended van if the floor covering needs to be transported from the store to the job site. Phil is a Herman native, and a 1975 graduate of Herman High School. He enlisted in the Army following graduation and after an honorable discharge from the Army came back to Herman to farm with his father. With time on his hands during the winter months, he began to help Ted Hlebechuk of Norcross lay flooring materials. Phil quit farming in 1994 and worked with Ted full time. Having experience by now, Phil decided to go into business for himself. He bought a van and stocked up on tools, and says he's been busy ever since. He attended a ceramic tile class at the Austin Technical College about a year after he went out on his own, and on a regular basis, attends seminars sponsored by various flooring companies to stay current with the industry. Phil says ninety percent of the carpet chosen is off-white or beige. Berber is still favored. Ceramic tile for flooring in neutral colors is also popular, as is laminated flooring. When not on his knees laying flooring, Phil enjoys gardening in the summer, making use of his greenhouse, and spending time with Karen, her daughter Ashley, and daughters, Heather, Noel and Lacey Groneberg of Fairmount, North Dakota. He enjoys fishing and hunting occasionally. Phil enjoys helping a client create a new, clean look for their surroundings, whether it's new flooring or ceramic tile added to the wall decor.
