Nic Magnuson Painting
& Lake Country Archery

by Olivia Richards,
Herman Review

When Nic Magnuson steps back to look at a house he just finished painting, he feels a lot of satisfaction. It looks great.

Nic started painting buildings when he was a ninth grader, working beside Gary, his father. Nic still thinks it's a great summer job. He's been at it for 25 years.

He's well seasoned, taking pride in doing a good job. He says preparation of exterior buildings is probably the worst part, often requiring a great deal of scraping and the use of a power washer to clean the surface. He maintains that a thorough job of cleaning the surface and applying the paint with a brush helps the wood last longer.

Nic spends the months from June through the middle of October, as long as the weather holds, painting outdoors. He has painted 12 houses this year.

He had planned to start apprenticing Patrick, his son, this summer. However, Patrick had the misfortune of being undercut during a basketball scrimmage at basketball camp last June, breaking his right wrist. It took nearly all summer to heal, but by the time school was ready to start, he was able to help out. Patrick is a senior at West Central Area School.

When it's time to quit painting, Nic spends the rest of the year through the spring rush at Backman Seeds of Herman. If things slow down there, he takes interior paint jobs.

Nic likes being his own boss. He sets his own hours, allowing himself to get home to enjoy the sports of fishing and hunting in the late summer/fall afternoons. That brings us to his second business, Lake Country Archery.

Lake Country Archery evolved from a love of bow hunting and is operated out of his home. He has been competitive in contests as well as in the field when patiently waiting for a deer to appear.

He can equip a beginner archer, as well as someone who is considered a seasoned archer. He makes all of the arrows from scratch, selling 100 dozen arrows and 40 bows in a year. He's very willing to share his expertise on bow hunting, giving instruction and advice.

He has passed on his love of hunting to his sons, Jaime and Patrick. Jaime plans to try bow hunting this fall. Nic's wife, Teresa, is also an avid bow hunter. They hope their younger son, Reid, will take an interest in bow hunting, too.

If you are in need of bow hunting supplies, or would like to book an exterior/interior painting job, call Nic at 677-2380.
