Dr. Mike Marchetti, dentist - since 1980 by Olivia Richards, Herman Review Dr. Mike Marchetti is quite familiar with Highway 27 that runs between Herman and Wheaton. He resides in Wheaton, but practices dentistry in Herman and Wheaton. He opened his office in Herman in December, 1980, and a year later, also in Wheaton. The office in Herman is located in the Fifth Street Square building, moving there in 1983 from an upstairs office at the First National Bank. "The move enabled me to better serve the older population of the area so they wouldnąt have to go up all the stairs," said Marchetti. Marchetti claims he didnąt have very good teeth as a child. As a result, he visited the dentist quite frequently. "That led to an interest in what they were doing to me," said Marchetti. He is a graduate of Hibbing High School and went on to attend Gustavus Adolphus College for three years before being accepted to the University of Minnesota dental school. Upon graduation from dental school, Marchetti accepted an internship in Elbow Lake. While there he was told the dentist in Herman was retiring. He was asked if he would be interested in coming over. Marchetti said he contacted Jerry Bryson of Herman. "He gave me a lot of help and encouragement to give it a go here in town. He was also the person who later encouraged me to move my practice to the Fifth Street Square," commented Marchetti. Marchetti is a general practice dentist, who does just about everything except orthodontics and implants. The Herman office is well equipped with the basic equipment, but if special X-rays are needed for orthodontics, the patients visit the Wheaton office. The Herman office is designed with an open operatory arrangement with dividers, hopefully giving the patient an open, more relaxed environment -- "if that is possible," joked Marchetti. "The relaxed nature of our office is very enjoyable for me, especially when patients start teasing each other from one side of the partition to the other. Dentistry is a stressful occupation, so itąs nice when you can have fun with your patients." Employees who help make the visit to the dentist a positive experience are Linda Caauwe, receptionist of Herman; Bobbi Jo Steffens, hygienist of Rosholt; Julie Nisja, hygienist of Wahpeton, and Carla Lee, dental assistant of Wheaton. Dr. Marchetti's wife, Laurie, is also a hygienist and does a lot of business work for the office. Their son, Adam, 26 is a chef in San Francisco, California, and daughter, Ashley is a junior at the Wheaton High School. Office hours in Herman are Mondays and Wednesdays, 8 a.m. until noon, and Fridays from 1-5 p.m. For appointments, telephone 677-2434. Over the years, office hours have been cut back. "Even though the population has dropped over the years causing me to decrease my hours here, I will try to keep working here as long as economically feasible in gratitude to the town who gave me my start,' said Marchetti. When Marchetti is away from the office he enjoys golfing, and playing and coaching volleyball. He is a volunteer for the Lions Club and the Wheaton Sports Booster Club, and enjoys coaching summer girls' softball. He is also the confirmation teacher at his church. |
