Larson Farm Supply --
always ready to help

by Olivia Richards,
Herman Review

Donald Larson and his son-in-law, Dave Reidner, are reluctant to venture a guess of how many tires they work on over the course of a year. They put the rubber to the road every day. In addition, they provide in-shop vehicle maintenance and repair.

The team operates Larson Farm Supply on Herman's main street. It's easy to find. Look for a red and white building with tires displayed all around. Brands for sale include Firestone, Michelin, and Bridgestone. Dave says they have most sizes in stock for "everything that rolls." If they don't have it, and it's important you have it soon, they can get overnight delivery.

Along with in-store tire needs, Dave operates a specially equipped truck to do in-the-field farm tire service. They are especially busy during the spring and harvest season, answering calls for tire replacement, or on-the-spot tire repairs on major farm implements. With sugar beet harvest nearly finished, they provided 24-hour service, affording the farmer little down time. Help was only a phone call away.

Perhaps your car or truck needs an oil change or a tune-up. Don and Dave provide car and truck repair and maintenance. They are willing to tackle major overhauls, tune-ups, brake work, drive-line work, windshield and other glass replacement, air conditioning maintenance and repair, wheel balancing, brake machining, and hydraulic brake repair. They have scanners and testers for computer equipped vehicles.

Dave has been part of Larson Farm Supply for 18 years. He is a graduate of Willmar Technical College in automotive technology. Prior to coming to Herman, he worked at the Morris Co-op for ten years.

Donny recalls a bit of history concerning the building housing Larson Farm Supply. The building dates back to 1902, and was known as the Winger Building. It was built for selling groceries. Later, it became a Ford dealership garage operated by Jim Lakey; then a hatchery; and again a Ford garage run by Melvin Barrows. Sometime later, in 1949, partners Blasyck and Larson sold cars and repaired vehicles. Donny worked for Blascyk and Larson from 1945 until 1954.

In 1955 Lee Pederson set up shop to sell International farm equipment in the building. G.E. Haney was selling Case implements in the building now housing Pederson Agri-SV, Inc. Donny left Blascyk and Larson and went to work for Haney.

In 1957, as recalled by Donny, Pederson and Haney switched buildings. Haney decided to quit selling Case equipment, so provided Donny with the inventory and parts. Two to three years later, Donny ceased selling Case equipment. He started in earnest to repair cars, trucks, and farm tractors, working on various brands.

Farmers and vehicle owners have relied on Larson Farm Supply for their tire and vehicle repair needs for the past 45 years. Don and Dave are there six days a week, with hours ranging from 7:30 a.m. until 6 or 7 p.m., except from mid-May through mid-July when they participate in the Herman Fishing League. The business phone number is 320-677-2281.
