Haney Enterprises

by Olivia Richards,
Herman Review

Haney Enterprises, Inc., of Herman is considered one of Herman's oldest businesses.

G. E. Haney, founder of Haney Land Company, along with his sons, Irv and Ed, were early entrepreneurs and supporters of Herman. Haney Land Company was established in 1914 in Herman. The business, in its infant stages, began in what is now the kitchen at Denny's Cafe. Six months later it moved to its present location at 506 Atlantic Avenue.

The city of Herman was to become a model city for other cities in the state to emulate, according to the League of Minnesota Municipalities back then. If Herman could be a model city, why couldn't Haney Land Company attract farmers with a model farm?

G. E. Haney and his sons developed the idea of a model farm as far as to build a state-of-the-art barn and an up-to-date house on a farmsite about three miles northwest of Herman. The hip roofed barn still stands on the vacant farmsite deemed a model farmstead.

The business expanded into real estate and insurance. Later they sold Case implements and farmed. They ceased selling implements in 1957, and quit farming in 1995.

When G. E. and Ed died, Irv. and G. R. (Dick) Haney became partners. When Irv died, Dick continued to operate the business. Pat joined the business in 1976.

In 1977 the business became Haney Enterprises, Inc., when Pat Haney and his father, Dick became a corporation. Since Dick's passing, Pat and his two daughters, Rachel and Megan operate the corporation.

Haney Enterprises wears many hats. They are agents for several types of insurance that fit the needs of businesses, farmers, homeowners, churches, schools, and cities. They can provide policies for errors and omissions, liquor liability for businesses, umbrella policies, they are licensed and bonded for farm sales, provide auto insurance, and property coverage for farms, homes, and businesses.

In addition, Pat and employee Luanne Horning can provide Notary Public service.

Luanne has been employed at Haney Enterprises for seven and a half years. She is knowledgeable about the insurance policies, and is the corporation's bookkeeper. If you are need of copies of a document or need something typed, even a Christmas letter, she says, stop and see her. She will help you out.

Perhaps unique to Haney Enterprises is the service of farm management. It is a service provided to absentee land owners who own land in the area. Pat may draw up rental agreements or leases between the owner and the renter, or take care of tax payments, or provide such other services as the land owner might require in his absence. Having a good rapport with the land owner and renter is important to Pat.

Haney Enterprises has continued to provide real estate services, farm management, and a variety of insurance policies to its customers for over 88 years, and remains a vital, trusted business on Herman's main street.
