Herman's newest convenience store

Five years ago, Gas & Goodies convenience store was built on the corner of Highway 27 and Highway 9 in the middle of Herman. The "Station of Seven Gables," with its unusual architecture, formerly known as Hoernemann Standard, was razed to make way for the new store.
Gas & Goodies is owned by Randy and Joan Hutmacher of Ottertail, and managed by Stephanie Bartell.
Stephanie says she enjoys working at the store and meeting new people who stop for various reasons every day.
And there are the regulars, who start their day with a cup of coffee and a visit at Gas & Goodies, whom Stephanie says she would miss if they didn't stop by. There are two booths and a table to accommodate the coffee crowd.
Traffic at Gas & Goodies this summer has been good, says Stephanie, because of the Highway 59 detour through Herman. The gas/diesel pumps are open 24-hours, although the store has set hours. The pumps are equipped with credit card machines.
The store has noon sandwich specials, Monday through Friday, with a different special each day. Their 14" baked pizzas are popular, offering pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, beef, or combos, with one topping for $9.99. Sub sandwiches are bagged to go, with a choice of different meats and toppings. Dairy products, some frozen grocery items, pop, juices, bottled water, and much more can be found in the coolers/freezer along the back wall of the store. Shelves hold other grocery items, candy, chips, some automotive needs, a small display of greeting cards, and much more.
Now that the evenings are cooler, and the days have shortened, you might want to rent a movie or a DVD to enjoy. Stephanie mentioned four new releases they have on hand at the present time: "40 Days and 40 Nights"; "Death to Smoochy," with Robin Williams; and for the kids, "Monsters, Inc.," and "Scooby Doo! & the Reluctant Werewolf." Movies are rotated about every three weeks, and new ones come in when released on video. A large display holds the many titles available.
For public use an ATM machine is available, along with a copy and Fax machine for a nominal fee.
Employees who monitor the register, make the pizzas, subs, and noon specials are assistant manager Becky Diehl, Ella Koenck, Gayle Hoffman, Merci Engquist, and Elizabeth Schroeder.
The store hours are Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturdays, 6 a.m. - 10 p.m., and Sundays, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. To place a pizza or sub order to go, call Gas & Goodies at 677-2727.
