Herman Medical Clinic/Pharmacy - celebrating 25 years of service and Pharmacy Grand Opening by Olivia Richards, Herman Review Dr. Stan Gallagher, doctor of osteopathic medicine, has been treating members of the communities of Herman and Wheaton for the past 25 years. Earlier this year he opened a pharmacy in Herman in conjunction with the clinic he operates. To celebrate his years of practicing medicine and the grand opening of the pharmacy, he is hosting an open house to be held at the Herman Legion Building on Wednesday, September 25, from 4-7 p.m. with sandwiches, salad, cake and coffee served. In recognition of the anniversary, Dr. Gallagher is providing a scholarship for an area student, who will graduate from high school next spring, based on academic success and need. In July, 1977, Dr. Gallagher began practicing medicine in Herman from a trailer house he parked on the edge of the school parking lot. The kitchen in the trailer was the lab, the living room was the waiting room, and the three bedrooms were turned into exam rooms. He stayed there two years until he opened the clinic on one side of the Herman Review building. This past year, when John Lommel, Herman's only pharmacist retired, and the drug store closed, Dr. Gallagher decided to open a pharmacy within the clinic. Dr. Gallagher is a licensed pharmacist. He said, "It has been beneficial to our patients and convenient for them, and a savings, because they don't need to go out of town to get their medicine." Clinic/pharmacist personnel employed by Dr. Gallagher include Julie Oachs, LPN and pharmacist technician; Linda Wohlenhaus, LPN, and Deb Peterson, insurance supervisor, located at the Wheaton office. Michelle Peterson, a physician's assistant, is at the Herman Clinic on Monday mornings. Affiliated with the Wheaton Hospital, Dr. Gallagher is excited about the $4 million renovation project ongoing at the hospital. A new hospital wing will replace the old one for patient care, and will include a new operating room and emergency room. Dr. Gallagher's son is following in his father's footsteps, having recently graduated from the Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center as a physician's assistant. He is joining his father's practice in October and is planning to open an office in Browns Valley. Clinic office hours in Herman are Mondays, 9 a.m. until 12 noon, Tuesdays from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., and Fridays, 9 a.m. until 12 noon. The pharmacy is open concurrent with the clinic hours. Emergency service is available by calling the Wheaton Hospital at 320-563-8226, or the Wheaton Clinic at 320-563-8295. Prescriptions can be mailed, if that is more convenient for you, especially to those who leave the area during the winter months. Home delivery to Herman residents is also available. |
