![]() Agriculture in this exceptionally fertile terrain offers opportunities found in few places in the world. Corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, and sugar beets grow abundantly throughout the region. The area boasts of having some of the richest top soil in the Midwest. But Herman's agricultural blessings are not limited to its productive farmland. New Horizons Ag Services, the result of a merger between a large local cooperative and Cenex Harvest States, operates one the largest grain exporting facilities in western Minnesota, helping to bring prosperity to the hard-working farmers of Grant, Stevens and Traverse counties in western Minnesota. The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe railroad serves the cooperative and is a familiar sight as trains of more than 100 cars stop for loading. The elevator stands 170 feet high and its storage bins have a capacity of over 1.2 million bushels of grain. New Horizons Ag Services can load a shuttle train in under 14 hours. The facility loads trains at the rate of 55,000 bushels of grain per hour. Herman sustains its local farming needs with an implement dealer, full-service repair shops, and parts dealers. ![]() Even with the enormous capacity of the elevator and storage bins, the bountiful harvest of 2000 forced the co-op to pile corn on the ground near the elevator.
